‘My Boys’ Gets Third Season
October 8, 2008 by Chandra
TBS made it official on Tuesday: the network has opted to renew the Jordana Spiro sitcom My Boys for a third season of nine episodes. Fans of the series can look forward to its return in the first quarter of 2009.
In the announcement, Content Creation Group senior vice president Michael Wright stated, “It’s that truly rare television combination of a talented cast with great chemistry, extremely smart and funny writing and outstanding production. MY BOYS is a quality show with a quality audience that continues to make the case that Turner is a true broadcast substitute.”
For those not in the know, My Boys stars Spiro as Chicago-based, 20-something sportswriter PJ Franklin, who’s constantly on the hunt for love, and her group of primarily male friends, plus one female best friend.
Now I’m looking forward to the resolution of the second-season wedding cliffhanger, which had the groom Bobby (Kyle Howard) reconsidering his feelings for PJ, who seemed to have moved on to a relationship with his brother. Good to know we’ll get some answers about what happens next.
My Boys: ‘John, Cougar, Newman Camp’ Spoilers (8-7-08)
August 4, 2008 by Chandra
Well, it’s time for the second-season finale of My Boys already, which will air on August 7 in the form of the episode “John, Cougar, Newman Camp.” And, no, I don’t think musician John Cougar Mellencamp will be making a cameo.
Instead, the episode will focus on the aftermath of Bobby’s best man, namely his wimpy brother Jack, having left without warning at the end of the last episode. The gang comes to Bobby’s rescue, however, and step in to take Jack’s place.
We’ll also learn more about Mike’s adventures with older woman Maggie, played by Mimi Rogers, as well as the new hookup between Stephanie and Kenny. Can either of those spontaneous “relationships” last? Don’t count on it. Unfortunately, it will probably take part of Season Three to wrap both of them up.
Additional guest stars include Marilu Henner (Taxi) and Christopher McDonald (Family Law). Catch a sneak peek at the episode after the jump, and note that the 30-minute season finale will air a half hour later, at the special time of 10pm EST.
My Boys: 2.8 ‘Jack and Bobby’ Recap
August 3, 2008 by Chandra
Original Air Date: July 31, 2008
Since this is the episode that precedes the final installment of My Boys’ second season, it’s no surprise the events mostly set up a bunch of tense or unexpected situations requiring resolutions — or potentially cliffhangers — in the finale.
The entire gang heads to the ridiculously huge and opulent ranch of Bobby and Jack’s father George Newman, a shameless dirty old man and dedicated drunk who repeatedly asks a totally disinterested Stephanie to marry him, which would make her wife Number Six. Stephanie is more interested in continually hounding Kevin for his lack of class, however, so it’s no surprise when PJ, unaware, passes by them making out in a room alone at the end of the episode.
Mike scores, too, with an older woman at the ranch’s welcome wine tasting and barbecue played by Mimi Rogers. After they eventually wind up in bed together following a day full of drinking wine by the gallon — Mike’s a beer dude, so the wine gets him drunk but doesn’t satisfy him — she leaves him in a room asleep while the rest of the gang worries about where he is.
My Boys: ‘Jack and Bobby’ Spoilers (7-31-08)
July 26, 2008 by Chandra
July 31 brings “Jack and Bobby,” the next-to-last episode of My Boys’ current second season.
It’s almost time for Bobby and Elsa to tie the knot, so the entire gang heads to his rich and raunchy daddy’s ranch for the big to-do. While there, brothers Jack and Bobby get into it, and Mike, who’s been unable to score for ages now, hooks up with an older woman played by Mimi Rogers. If Rogers is just half as good as she was on The Loop, all will be fun during her scenes.

My Boys: ‘Opportunity Knocks’ Spoilers (7-24-08)
July 19, 2008 by Chandra
There’s just two episodes left now until My Boys’ second-season finale on August 7. In the meantime, the big wedding approaches on the July 24 episode called “Opportunity Knocks,” which features the return of Season One guest star David Pressman as Mexican Freddy.
PJ also has a big decision to make given that Bobby’s brother Jack seems to be very interested in her. The problem is his reputation for being a player, something we all know is the last thing PJ needs or wants.
In addition, Bobby has a difficult time surviving the craziness that goes hand in hand with throwing a big wedding, and Andy begins counseling sessions with his wife.
A sneak peek for the episode follows the jump.
My Boys: ‘Dudes Being Dudes’ Spoilers (7-17-08)
July 15, 2008 by Chandra
Well, as the title of My Boys’ July 17 episode, “Dudes Being Dudes,” makes clear, this one is mostly about PJ’s guys and guys in general.
Bobby’s best friend throws a bachelor party for the husband-to-be but gets on Brendan’s bad side over who pays for the event. And at Elsa’s shower, Stephanie hogs the spotlight with her new book about getting out of bad relationships.
PJ also confronts her brother Andy regarding his relationship with Jo (Guest Star Nia Vardalos), while Bobby’s brother Jack tries to get something started with the sportswriter.

My Boys airs Thursdays on TBS at 9:30pm EST.
My Boys: 2.5 ‘Take My Work Wife…Please’ Recap
July 14, 2008 by Chandra
Original Air Date: July 10, 2008
Poor PJ experiences the pangs of being the only girl in her gang of guys on this episode of My Boys.
At the bar, the guys whine, er, gripe about their individual soul-shattering, world-ending problems. Kenny avoids phone calls from Caitlin, the young woman from Andy and Mike’s improv class who has a thing for him, because he’s currently dating Beth, the other woman he met earlier at PJ’s singles dinner party. When he tells Caitlin about his relationship with Beth and she doesn’t care, Kenny starts dating both women but becomes terrified they’ll find out about each other and then become best friends or something.
Brendan prepares for his new temp mailroom gig at Andy’s law firm by spending his last twenty bucks on a pitcher of beer for the gang. He later bumps into a woman at the firm, a married lawyer, who went to Northeastern with him, and he begins to see how far behind his peers he is professionally. Nothing is worse than being called “copy slave” by the arrogant lawyers, however, except having to work alongside a stupid guy who must recite the alphabet out loud to determine which names come first.
Bobby is agitated because Elsa is too busy worrying about being deported to tend to their wedding, which is giving his mother Pamela extra leeway to go crazy with plans. For some reason that neither Stephanie nor I understand, PJ jumps in feet first and starts coordinating things with Bobby’s mother in Elsa’s absence.
Finally, Mike practically begs PJ to fix him up with one of her friends to ease his dry dating spell. More on that soon.
My Boys: ‘Take My Work Wife…Please’ Spoilers (7-10-08)
July 10, 2008 by Chandra
On My Boys’ July 10 episode, “Take My Work Wife…Please,” My Big Fat Greek Wedding star Nia Vardalos returns to play Jo, Andy’s new “close” co-worker. Of course, the gang remains convinced that something hinky is going on between the two, which prompts Andy to set Jo up on a date with boorish Mike to prove otherwise. Poor woman!
Elsewhere, PJ makes the bad, bad, bad decision to help her one true love Bobby plan his wedding to nanny Elsa; Brendan becomes even more depressed after landing a temp mailroom job at Andy’s law firm; Kenny’s unexpected winning streak with the ladies continues unabated; and the entire gang learns they’re featured in Stephanie’s recently published book, which probably isn’t even remotely a good thing since their identities are poorly disguised.

My Boys: 2.4 ‘Spit Take’ Recap
July 5, 2008 by Chandra
Original Air Date: July 3, 2008
Stephanie’s debut book, You’re a Great Guy, But…, is a guide for women on how to get out of bad relationships, and the preliminary orders are through the roof at 253,000 when this episode of My Boys opens. Unfortunately, although everyone gets the “but” at the end, poor Kenny is stumped until the gang explains.
Andy is taking improv classes at work to help him improve his negotiating skills, and when Mike learns the students are mostly actresses half Andy’s age, he signs up, too. Although annoying at first, the classroom time together eventually helps Mike and Andy bond, to the extent that they’re both excited when it comes time for a public performance. Yet, the gang gets a big shock during the big show because Andy invites his colleague Joe from work, and they learn Joe is actually Jo, otherwise known as a woman (Nia Vardalos).
Meanwhile, Brandon’s depressed or sick or both, but he refuses to go to a real doctor because he’s lost his health insurance. Instead, he turns to Dr. Brando, whom PJ reveals is a Harvard-educated imaginary doctor in his head that doles out incorrect medical advice. For instance, to replace penicillin and save “80 bucks,” Bobby grows mold on some bread and eats it (Ew!). Dr. Brando ultimately diagnoses Brandon with shingles, which he decides to treat by listening to calming CDs with nature sounds.
Finally, when Bobby learns of Elsa’s visa problems that could lead to her deportation in two weeks when her visa expires, he proposes. All but Brandon think this move is insane, and he eventually learns why PJ is really so opposed — her personal feelings for Bobby — when Stephanie gives up the secret when she stops by the apartment to show off a hard copy of her new book, written under the pen name the Great Guru and with a biography on the back that’s not even close to the truth; it claims she lives in another state in a house made of recycled tires, for instance.
My Boys: ‘Spit Take’ Spoilers (7-3-08)
July 2, 2008 by Chandra
Mama mia, it’s Nia, as in My Big Fat Greek Wedding star Nia Vardalos. Starting with the July 3 episode “Spit Take,” the actress begins a multi-episode arc on My Boys playing a colleague of PJ’s brother Andy. As viewers will soon learn, the situation between those two is going to get really deep really quickly.
Lots of other stuff happens on the episode, as well, such as Stephanie’s book finally hitting stores … with an inflated biography on the back, Brendan playing doctor … with himself, and Bobby trying to cure his girlfriend Elsa’s visa problems … with a very problematic plan.
Take a look at some of the action in the following preview clip.
My Boys airs Thursdays on TBS at 9:30pm EST.
