Sitcoms on DVD This Week: Girlfriends, Married with Children

October 13 marks the DVD release of two notable sitcoms: the eleventh and final season of the raunchy Fox comedy classic Married with Children and the seventh and next-to-last season of the still-popular UPN/CW sitcom Girlfriends. How sad it is for many fans that neither show is in production now.
However, the good news is that Married with Children star Ed O’Neill, who played lovable yet incorrigible patriarch Al Bundy, also stars in ABC’s very entertaining new sitcom Modern Family, which was recently picked up for a full first season. Catch it on Wednesdays at 9pm ET.

Also out today on DVD are two feature flicks featuring popular TV-comedy talent: the romantic comedy Away We Go, starring John Krasinski (The Office) and Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live), and the animated family comedy Monsters vs. Aliens, which includes voice work by The Office’s Rainn Wilson, Will Arnett (Saturday Night Live), and The Colbert Report’s Stephen Colbert, among many other funny people.

New sitcoms out on DVD today, September 22, are Season Three of NBC’s Emmy-winning 30 Rock and Season Four of the classic Emmy-winning ABC/NBC comedy Taxi.
Most of the half-hour comedies that make up NBC’s two-hour Thursday-night sitcom block launched their new seasons on September 17. 30 Rock will finally take its place in the lineup on October 15 at 9:30pm ET after winning five Emmys during the September 20 ceremony.

Fans of workplace mockumentaries have it good this week, thanks to the DVD releases for NBC’s longtime Thursday-night favorite The Office and recent newbie Parks and Recreation.
The Office returns for its sixth season on Thursday, September 17, at 9pm ET. Catch up on everything that happened during the fifth season with the five-disc boxed set, which contains all 26 episodes and numerous features, including webisodes.

Viewers still grieving over The CW’s decision to cancel its only two remaining half-hour comedies earlier this year can now check out the very first season of one of them, namely The Game. The show lasted for three seasons, the first of which began in October 2006.

The week of August 25 was a fairly brisk week for sitcom DVD releases, with a total of three popular series finally making their latest season available.
Fans of Showtime’s Californication, starring X-Files alum David Duchovny, can now purchase the 12-episode second season, which ended on December 14, 2008. The third season, also containing 12 episodes, is currently slated to premiere on Sunday, September 27, at 10pm ET.

Director and writer Kevin Smith has done it again. Combining the talents of Seth Rogen (Pineapple Express, Superbad, Knocked Up) and Elizabeth Banks (Scrubs, The 40 Year Old Virgin, the Spider-Man trilogy) with a hilarious script helped him create his latest hit flick, last year’s distinctively titled sex comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno.
