The network has reportedly declined to pick up the David and Patrick Cassidy comedy for additional episodes, making tonight’s “Smells Like Teen Drama” the last new installment of the series. But at least the show is going out in style, with former Privileged and Bionic Woman star Lucy Hale making a guest appearance.

Here’s what happens during her visit: Although Ruby and Jordan compete to dominate the attention of Ruby’s best friend, she ends up becoming Jordan’s girlfriend anyway. Elsewhere, David and Patrick insist Ben learn how to stand up for himself when they learn he’s being bullied at school, but Audie believes it would be best for Ben to turn the other cheek.

Unfortunately, the outlook isn’t as rosy for 10 Things‘ fellow frosh summer sitcom Ruby & the Rockits. According to reports, that show not only didn’t receive an order for additional episodes, but it also won’t continue past its initial ten-episode run. You win some, you lose some.

Based on the 1999 Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles film of the same name, 10 Things I Hate About You stars Larry Miller (Boston Legal), Lindsey Shaw (Aliens in America), and Meaghan Jette Martin (Camp Rock) as the tight-knit Stratford family. The last fresh episode aired on September 8, so stay tuned to learn when ABC Family schedules the show’s return.

Ruby & The Rockits stars real-life half-brothers David Cassidy and Patrick Cassidy as small-screen siblings Patrick and David Gallagher, and Alexa Vega (Spy Kids) as David’s musically talented teenage daughter Ruby. Patrick is a former 1980s pop star living quietly with his wife Audie (Katie Amanda Keane) and two sons Jordan (Austin Butler) and Ben (Kurt Doss). That is until his brother David, a former fellow Rockits band member, shows up out of the blue with his newly found teenage daughter Ruby. Since David refuses to give up his past glory days, he’s determined to convince Patrick to put their past behind him in order to help raise Ruby while he continues to perform.

The television version of that movie sports the same name and a similar premise, and it stars Aliens in America alumna Lindsey Shaw, along with Larry Miller (Boston Legal, reprising his role from the earlier movie), Meaghan Jette Martin (Camp Rock), Dana Davis (Heroes), and Gregory Peck’s grandson Ethan Peck (That ’70s Show).

During tonight’s special 36-minute premiere, we meet Miller’s Walter Stratford, the over-protective father of daughters Kat (Shaw), an outspoken feminist, and Bianca (Martin), a dedicated social climber. The sisters are just starting to attend a new high school.

Meanwhile, Peck plays the requisite bad boy, Patrick Verona (the role Ledger originally portrayed on the silver screen), Davis plays head cheerleader Chastity Church, and Nicholas Braun (Princess Protection Program) plays nice guy Cameron James.

Of note is the fact that it was directed by Wonder Years child star Fred Savage, now 32, who has taken a directorial seat behind the camera on a number of comedy-centric television series on various networks in the last few years, including ABC’s Ugly Betty, CBS’ Worst Week, FX’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Starz’s Party Down, TBS’ My Boys, and The CW’s defunct Aliens in America. The guy is definitely getting around and building an impressive résumé in the process.

While sophomore Rusty focuses on participating in Rush Week for the first time and recruiting sought-after freshman Andy (Jesse McCartney) as a Kappa Tau pledge, Calvin copes with pressure from Evan to also land Andy as an Omega Chi pledge.

On the sorority side, Ashleigh and Casey begin to suspect Rebecca is actually a “double-mole” for Frannie when the former ZBZer’s new sorority manages to sabotage Zeta Beta Zeta’s Rush Week contribution, a Project Runway-style fashion skit. And the claws come out … again.

While Rusty copes with his new existence as a sophomore Kappa Tau resident and engineering major, Casey tries to figure out how to break the news to her BFF Ashleigh that she intends to move out of the Zeta Beta Zeta house. Then there’s the ongoing tension caused by Frannie and her new sorority, which prompts Ashleigh to recruit a spy, whom Casey doesn’t trust, for a little undercover work.

Also, new freshman Andy (Jesse McCartney, Summerland), a student Calvin knows from high school, arrives and immediately attracts the attention of nearly everyone on campus, including Kappa Tau Gamma and Omega Chi Delta reps who want him as a pledge. Either Andy is one insanely awesome guy or the incoming frosh class at Cyprus-Rhodes University is pretty darn small and short on cool kids.

Two sneak peeks at the midseason premiere follow the jump. The first features Casey bumping into Ashleigh, Frannie, and Rebecca after arriving back on campus with Max Tyler (Michael Rady, Swingtown), and the second shows Andy getting a taste of frat life, super-sized Cappie style, with Rusty and Calvin.
