None of the human characters on Amy Sherman-Palladino’s (Gilmore Girls) new sitcom The Return of Jezebel James are named Jezebel or James. Instead, the series focuses on two sisters with contrasting personalities: older, high-strung children’s book editor Sarah (Parker Posey) and younger, sloppy ne'er-do-well Coco (Lauren Ambrose). The Jezebel James of the title refers to Coco’s childhood imaginary friend that Sarah later exploits and turns into a popular children’s book heroine.
The main focus of the series is Sarah’s quest to have a biological child, despite a busy and successful publishing career, the lack of a long-term partner, and an irreparable medical condition that has left her barren. Her brilliant solution to the problem is to ask Coco to move into her fabulous loft-style, co-op apartment and live there while serving as a surrogate mother for her unborn child. Miraculously, Sarah’s estranged younger sister agrees.
Other regular and recurring characters on the sitcom include Sarah’s young work assistant Buddy (Michael Arden), her significant other Marcus (Scott Cohen), and her overbearing parents Ronald (Ron McClarty) and Talia (Dianne Wiest).
