When Joan (Tracee Ellis Ross) buys an expensive new kitchen range for their new house, her fiancé Aaron (Richard T. Jones) gets upset that she spent money without discussing it with him. Later, after Joan and Aaron stop arguing, he receives news that his National Guard unit is being called to Iraq. In order to prevent Aaron (Richard T. Jones) from going to Iraq, Joan (Tracee Ellis Ross) kidnaps him and takes him to Mexico. In Mexico, Aaron explains to Joan that he cannot run away from the war and suggests they get married before he leaves. Meanwhile, Maya (Golden Brooks) finds marijuana hidden in the house and thinks its Jabari’s (Kendre Berry), and Lynn (Persia White) gets a manager, but feels she cannot celebrate because of Joan and Aaron’s situation. When Lynn (Persia White) meets Xander (Guest Star Quddus Phillipe), a cute student at UCLA, he asks her to perform at a rally raising awareness to save the environment. But when Lynn’s manager gets her a gig at the House of Blues for the same day, she must decide where she will perform. Meanwhile, Maya (Golden Brooks) gets upset when she hears Jabari (Kendre Berry) use the “b” word, and Joan (Tracee Ellis Ross) enlists William’s (Reggie Hayes) help when she hears strange noises coming from her crawlspace. Maya (Golden Brooks) tries to avoid calls from her publisher when she experiences writers’ block and is unable to complete her third book. Later, Maya learns that her pregnancy is at risk, and the doctors instruct her to stay off her feet as much as possible, but she doesnt listen. Meanwhile, Joan (Tracee Ellis Ross) is having a hard time renting her apartment to Lynn (Persia White), and William (Reggie Hayes) and Monica (Keesha Sharp) start to discover differences in their relationship.

At a gathering to celebrate William (Reggie Hayes) and Monica’s (Keesha Sharp) pregnancy, Maya (Golden Brooks) makes a joke that the baby is hers. Worried that Maya is having trouble dealing with the loss of their baby, Darnell (Khalil Kain) confronts Maya and learns that she has been taking pills to help her cope. Meanwhile, Lynn (Persia White) and Joan (Tracee Ellis Ross) attend an Erykah Badu concert, and Lynn’s manager announces that a record label wants to offer her a deal. Darnell tells William about how a woman’s body changes after pregnancy, leaving William to fear that his sex life will never be the same. Golden Brooks wrote the episode.

Lynn (Persia White) gets upset when she learns that her record label is pushing back the release of her album to promote another artist, Chrisette Michele (guest starring as herself). When Lynn confronts the record label, they tell her they are concerned about how to market her because they feel she is not “black” enough. Meanwhile, at a doctor’s appointment, Monica (Keesha Sharp) decides she does not want to know the sex of the baby. However, William (Reggie Hayes) finds out the sex of the baby and accidentally text messages it to Monica, then enlists Joan (Tracee Ellis Ross) to help steal Monica’s phone.
