At the end of an article about the swift yanking of The CW’s godawful bore The Beautiful Life: TBL (what were the folks responsible for that thinking?!), Variety reported that TBS has confirmed Bill Engvall & Company will not return for a fourth season.

The comedy ended its ten-episode third season just a few weeks ago, on September 5. Yet, many viewers probably suspected this development was coming as soon as the network moved the show from a weekday time slot to Saturday nights, a place where TV series traditionally go to die.

And so another family-oriented sitcom bites the dust.

The fun starts at the regular time of 9pm ET with “Car Trouble.”

While Bryan copes with a bully at school, Bill tries and then — Surprise! — promptly fails to help Trent pick out a new car that he’s been saving up to buy.

Following at 9:30pm is the actual season finale, “Trash Talk.”

When the Pearsons and a new neighbor have a dispute over outdoor trashcans, Bill goes overboard and Paul winds up involved, too. Elsewhere, after Trent fails his driving test, he blames the setback on having lost his lucky red quarter.

Uh-oh! It looks like Lauren is in trouble again…

This time for lying to her mother Susan, which lands the oldest Pearson child a punishment that lasts almost a month. And, of course, Bill disagrees with the severity of the grounding, creating yet more tension in an already tense situation.

Elsewhere, poor Paul, always trying to attract the opposite sex (and not doing too good a job), persuades the Pearson boys Bryan and Trent to help him fake a snazzy online profile. Too bad actual dating means he eventually has to meet the ladies in person.

You’d think it would be a good thing when Bill’s deadbeat brother Danny (Stephen Dunham, What I Like About You), basking in the afterglow of his recent success, begins giving Bill’s family all sorts of gifts…

But you would be thinking wrong if you’re Bill himself because the Pearson patriarch isn’t the least bit happy about what he thinks is Danny’s attempt to purchase his family’s love.

Meanwhile, poor Paul has another bad experience when he makes a donation to the school’s silent auction and things don’t go so well afterward.

The episode revolves around Bill and Susan’s quest to experience “the excitement of young love” again. When Susan reveals to her husband that she’s missing that old loving feeling, he decides to take them both on a trip down memory lane, featuring the most unforgettable moments from their earlier dating days. All together now: “Awww!”

While the elder Pearsons are busy with that romantic project, Lauren and Trent are stuck at home babysitting Bryan. Since they each have movie dates they’d rather be on, their solution is to take their younger brother along. Too bad he disappears during their masterful plan, though.

First up tonight are the episodes “Give Me a Break” at 9pm and “You Decide” at 9:30pm.

During the season premiere, Bill breaks the bad news to his brood that money matters are getting dire, hence Lauren can’t go on vacation for spring break, and Paul copes with having to reveal that he’s lost Trent’s precious baby photographs.

The following episode features Bill getting back at Susan for subtly manipulating him, Trent unwisely participating in a pretend United Nations delegation to impress a girl, and Mr. Faulkner (Brian Doyle Murray) nearly making Bill and Susan go blind when he decides to use his new hot tub in the buff.

There are no sneak peeks, but I’ve watched the episodes in advance and I assure fans that the Pearson family is still very entertaining and funny. Tune in tonight and throughout the summer run to see for yourself.

On the first episode, Trent and Bryan are put in charge of Paul’s pet iguana while their sister Lauren starts working for a mean boss at the mall in order to buy an expensive purse.

Then, on the finale, Bill refuses to let Lauren buy an expensive prom dress, and Trent does his darnedest to become an Internet celebrity by putting together his very own online video. If he succeeds, I can’t think of a better or easier way to give his straight-and-narrow parents matching heart attacks.

Susan really takes her dreams seriously on this episode of The Bill Engvall Show, probably because, she claims, the last two times she had similar dreams, they came true. First her friend was left at the altar on her wedding day and then her uncle died of an unexpected heart attack.

The second past event makes Susan start pestering Bill to get a physical, and he eventualy does after a bit of resistance due to his fears of dying and learning something is wrong. On the other hand, her latest dream — Bill has an affair with a woman named Penelope — makes her believe her husband is going to commit adultery.

That superstitious reading seems to gather some traction when a woman named Penelope calls the house and asks for Bill. What Susan doesn’t realize is the woman is just a waitress, and she’s calling to inform Bill he left his credit card behind at the restaurant where he and Paul had lunch earlier. Desperate Paul is the one who’s really interested in Penelope, even after she informs Bill and Susan, who returns to the restaurant with Bill at his suggestion so she can see nothing is going on, that she’s engaged.

The episode’s second plot involves middle child Trent, who’s psyched about finally getting his driver’s license, but not about taking lessons from his overly worrisome dad. As his sister Lauren reveals, their mother Susan is even worse. Thinking he has no other option, Trent offers Lauren $20 to coach him instead.

Their younger brother Bryan repeatedly points out during their drive to the post office (so he can be the first in his class to buy the new Einstein stamp) that there’s only one problem with Trent’s alternative arrangement — it’s illegal because an adult driving instructor, parent, or guardian must be in the car with someone learning to drive at all times. The cop that approaches them when Trent stops the car in a crosswalk confirms Bryan’s point, but he cuts the teens some slack since it’s obvious how annoying Bryan is.

This episode is another average installment in a sitcom about an average family. It isn’t rolling on the floor funny, but it has a couple of moments, most, oddly enough, involving Tim Meadows’ secondary character Paul.

After a dream that she believes is a premonition, Susan gets the idea that her husband Bill is going to begin having an affair with a woman specifically named Penelope, and her fear increases when Bill encounters a waitress who has the exact same fairly uncommon name. Maybe it’s just me, but Bill doesn’t seem like the adulterer type in any way, shape, or form, so I’m confident all of this anxiety is over nothing.

Meanwhile, Susan is also preoccupied with Bill seeing a doctor for a physical, and Trent is focused on finally getting a driver’s license.

The sneak peek after the jump shows Susan and Bill having a nice, long, heated (for them, at least) chat.

When Bill and Susan suspect that Trent has lied to them about alcohol being served at a party he attended, they nose around his Facebook page to dig up some dirt.

In other doggy developments, the family pet Raffles takes a liking to the house of perpetually irritable neighbor Mr. Faulkner, and he hides underneath it after a noise scares him. The only problem is the dog then refuses to come back out.
