We’re just three episodes into the second season, and Chuck is holding up mighty darn well. It’s great to see a fairly new series keep getting better and better, which is definitely the case here. The cast, the acting, the plots, the guest stars — everything is still clicking and delivering.

Chuck Versus the Break-Up” opens in 2005, with undercover partners Sarah and Bryce posing as Mr. and Mrs. Anderson during a dangerous mission in Bogotá, Colombia. Bryce is captured by one goon after a brief chase through the streets, but alert Sarah manages to shoot the man once in the head while he’s holding a gun to Bryce’s head.

However, at the end of the episode, Sarah freezes in a similar situation, with Chuck the one held at gunpoint, and fails to take the shot because of her feelings for Chuck. As Bryce warns his former college roommate after Devon finally breaks the news to him that Sarah is in love with Chuck, emotions are dangerous things for field agents to have because enemies like FULCRUM don’t act on or care about them.

In the present, Chuck’s inferiority complex kicks into high gear when he stops by Sarah’s place and learns Bryce is in town. There’s an excellent reason for his old roomie suddenly showing up, though: the team’s latest mission requires them to work a party thrown by Von Hayes (Crossing Jordan’s Steve Valentine) in order to retrieve a microchip FULCRUM stole.

Zachary Levi, Steve Valentine/Chuck 2.03The device is an update for the Intersect containing numerous sensitive files that identify agents’ covers, and FULCRUM hired Von Hayes to decrypt the chip for $15 million. Chuck’s job is to flash on the unidentified FULCRUM agent while Casey handles intelligence from a van outside and Sarah and Bryce pose as the Andersons.

Everybody goes back to their cover jobs after General Beckman explains the mission. Unfortunately, just as Sarah prepares to tell Bryce about her relationship with Chuck at Orange Orange, Ellie arrives to ask Sarah to be a bridesmaid and sees what looks like the couple holding hands. Ever the good sister, Ellie heads directly to Buy More to tell Chuck, which kind of kicks him while he’s already down and feeling small with Bryce around.

The knowledge also makes it harder for Chuck to function during Hayes’ party, and Chuck quickly becomes distracted by Sarah and Bryce’s sultry dancing. They’re only causing a scene to identify video cameras and prevent suspicion if they have to fake making out later to hide their covers near the vault with the microchip. But agitated Chuck drops an expensive bottle of wine when they start kissing on the dance floor, which causes Hayes to “fire” Chuck on the spot.

Determined not to fail, especially with Bryce around, Chuck manages to flash on the female FULCRUM agent’s voice while she’s talking to Hayes with her back to Chuck. He then gets kidnapped by the same agent when he sneaks back inside after getting kicked out, but not before he recognizes the microchip on Hayes’ key chain.

Yvonne Strahovsk, Matthew Bomer/Chuck 2.03All hell breaks lose then when the FULCRUM agent shoots Hayes’ bodyguard, and she runs one way while Hayes heads in the opposite direction. Bryce insists he and Sarah follow the chip that could endanger their lives if it falls into the wrong hands, but Sarah’s feelings for Chuck cause her to go after the FULCRUM agent holding Chuck at gunpoint instead. She does manage to save Chuck, but gets hurt herself when the FULCRUM agent retaliates with a bomb thrown in their direction before escaping.

Sarah’s recuperation in the hospital where Ellie and Devon work is pretty eventful. After the engaged couple spot Bryce visiting, Devon corners him and finally breaks the news that Sarah is not only dating Chuck but seems to love him. Bryce is surprised, yet he does make a good point when he warns Chuck later that it’s dangerous for Sarah to have personal feelings for the guy she’s supposed to protect. Case in point: the way she went off mission at Hayes’ party. Another case in point: the end of the episode.

Chuck gets Hayes’ phone number from the bouquet of flowers he sends to Sarah but that Devon intercepts, incorrectly believing they’re from Bryce. This gives Chuck the opportunity to prove his worth by setting up an exchange: the microchip for $4.5 million. Before the deal is completed and the FULCRUM agent inevitably shows up again to steal the microchip, the supposedly secret meeting is crashed by thugs hired to recover the chip. Chuck proves himself again by exchanging the $4.5 million with the thugs for the microchip, but the FULCRUM agent still manages to grab him and hold him at gunpoint inside.

Meanwhile, Sarah arrives on the scene after singlehandedly taking down the FULCRUM agent sent to kill her in the hospital, and she freezes and fails to shoot when the other FULCRUM agent holds a gun to Chuck’s head. Casey sneaks up from behind and makes the shot himself, but now everyone knows that Sarah can’t seem to avoid hesitating when Chuck’s life is at stake.

Bryce visits Chuck one last time at the end of this episode, bearing a pair of cool black sunglasses to help Chuck be a real spy, but Chuck refuses them because he doesn’t want to be a real spy. Sarah’s compromised feelings still have to be addressed, and Bryce assures Chuck he’ll do the right thing because he always does. Bryce also reveals that’s why he sent Chuck the Intersect in the first place, and he adds that although Chuck hates him right now, someday he’ll realize that Bryce is and has always been looking out for him. Mysterious!

Chuck and Sarah have one final heart-to-heart discussion before they join Ellie and Devon for dinner. He explains that while Sarah is the best thing that ever happened to him and he’s imagined how great they’ll be together when the Intersect is finally out of his head, he also understands they don’t have a future as a couple. He’s just a normal guy who wants a normal life, and Sarah will never be normal.

Sad Sarah holds back tears before they go inside, and later that night, Chuck gets an Intersect update when he can’t stop himself from putting on the sunglasses Bryce left in his room with the note “For a real spy.” Yes, the shades have that microchip, and after the computer in his head finishes updating and the chip self-destructs, Chuck falls to the floor, just like in the show’s very first episode, only this time he says, “I hate Bryce Larkin.”

I don’t know about everybody else, but I can’t wait to find out how Bryce has been looking out for Chuck and how much of a real spy Chuck is going to be after the Intersect update. Plus, there’s also the not-so-small issue of Anna Wu.

She impresses Casey when she kicks Mitt’s (Michael Strahan) butt herself for terrorizing Morgan and Lester (Mitt and his gigantic buddies love hanging out — loudly — in Buy More’s home theater demo room during their lunch break) since they aren’t up to it. Casey calls for a background check on Anna to see if she’s a good candidate for spy work. Fingers crossed we’ll see her out in the field soon.

I really loved this episode. I actually found it more compelling than Heroes, which is kind of a first for me.

Absolutely, Judy. This episode was more than just entertaining — it also built the foundation for more great episodes in the future. I’m really looking forward to what’s going to happen next.
