Tina Fey Does Sarah Palin on ‘Saturday Night Live’

September 14, 2008 by Chandra

Tina Fey…and knocks the parody out of the park.

My madness had a clear method. When I posted about the 34th-season premiere of Saturday Night Live yesterday, I intentionally failed to mention the buzzed-about potential visit by former SNL head writer and current 30 Rock mastermind Tina Fey.

There was just so much talk and hope it would happen but no clear confirmation, I didn’t want to jinx the possibility of seeing Fey in the un-enviable role of Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

Well, it happened, kiddos, and, just as expected, Fey delivered big time. She deserves major props for her spot-on impersonation of the dimwitted governor of Alaska.

While Fey mimicked Palin’s painfully clueless, space-cadet deportment to perfection, her fellow Baby Mama star Amy Poehler did an ace version of Democrat Hilary Clinton that made the Republican look like an amateur at Happy Hour onscreen. I guess many would argue real life is about the same.

Fey and Poehler rocked the sketch in so many ways; no matter what you think about the rest of the season premiere (not so great, in my opinion, as usual these days), the funny ladies got it off to a fine start.

Take a look at the YouTube NBC clip of the opening sketch after the jump. This one is an instant classic for sure.

This was the funniest SNL clip I’ve seen in a LONG time. They were both great in their respective roles. SPOT ON!!!!!

  2. Rick says:

The opening sketch was a killer. Well written and perfectly performed. After that…nothing. Lame, dated sketches…even Weekend Update was one of the weakest ever.
Tina Fey is missed in more ways than one.

  3. Chandra says:

Ron and Rick, great minds all think alike (at least in this case)!

Best spoof of the season. I hope it rolls all over the web. Yup… spot on.

I believe terms as “dimwitted”, “Un-enviable”, “Clueless” and more should have been left out. Comedy is comedy – let us keep politics out. If you’re a left-leaning, tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing, liberal – that’s fine. But to call Mrs. Palin all these hateful things is not only untrue, but shows a lack of class and decorum.
The impersonation was well done though. I enjoyed it quite a bit as both women (Palin and Fey) are attractive and very talented.

Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion, which is why bloggers have every right to include their own in posts. If I wanted to nitpick, I’d counter that your comment should have left out the adjective “attractive” since such language is part of the major problem the sketch was speaking out against, in case it wasn’t clear.

Chastising strangers on the Internet, no matter what their political persuasion, for how they express themselves isn’t my thing, though. If only I had that much free time.

  7. Frank V says:

The difference Chandra, is my words were complimentary – to both women. Yours were inflammatory to only one.

    Bias is sickening when unnecessary.

  8. Phil Robles says:

There is nothing bias or inflammatory really, when the truth is indicated.
The laughter that the the sketch elicited naturally comes from the old adage “truth hurts”…and we were laughing till it hurt.

To say that Palin is “dimwitted” isn’t slander or mischievous half-truth.
Its the general perception after her background and personality has been aired since being chosen by McCain.
“Clueless” is synonymous to dimwitted and these are not put-downs but simply the obvious.
