THE CLIENT — RICKY WATKINS

Following the botched attempt on the previous episode “Scatter Point” to identify Carla through her assumed workplace in a Florida building, Michael has Sam stay with his mother Madeline for a few days to protect her from any unexpected retaliatory attacks. Sam’s cover is that he needs a place to stay after Veronica kicked him out on the last episode.

Michael’s next client turns up at Madeline’s when his childhood friend Ricky Watkins drops by. After telling Michael his brother Andre, another childhood friend, is doing hard prison time, Ricky reveals his problem.

He now works as an accountant for a former gangster turned hip-hop mogul named Valentine (Method Man). Somebody stole $2 million dollars from a charity Valentine supports and is trying to make Ricky look like the guilty party. Ricky suspects it’s Valentine’s #2, Eddie Ash, attempting to set him up so he can keep the money after laundering it to remove any evidence of its origins.

Plan A involves Michael going undercover as crooked Boston real estate developer Jimmy Glynn to persuade Eddie to launder the money through a bogus development deal. That plan falls through, however, when new operative Victor (Michael Shanks), angry that Michael is spending too much time on his client instead of Carla’s orders, blows Michael’s setup. Victor scares Eddie by telling him the FBI is watching Jimmy, which forces Eddie to back out of the development deal initially.

Plan B next involves getting Eddie to think he can force Jimmy to launder his money if he threatens to rat Jimmy out to the FBI. The only complication is Eddie won’t move the money until Ricky is dead.

So, after one failed hit attempt on the accountant, foiled by Fiona when she shows up as a bitter ex and scares the killing squad away, Fi and Sam kidnap Valentine and take him to Ricky’s place, where he watches, hidden, as Eddie holds a gun to Ricky’s head. Busted and case closed.

THE NEW OPERATIVE — VICTOR

Carla’s coded crossword-puzzle message from the previous episode, “tidy pelican,” gives Michael directions to his meet with a new operative, emotionally detached and possibly psychotic or sociopathic Victor, also known as The Wrangler. Michael’s instructions are to help Victor transport something in a wooden box from a deserted warehouse.

After avoiding killing two guards — as Victor would without even blinking — by setting off explosives nearby to distract them from realizing a theft is in progress, Michael uses his handy homemade x-ray machine underneath the trunk of the getaway car to learn what’s inside the box since Victor won’t say. The stolen goods consist of one sniper rifle. And the Carla plot thickens…
