‘Til Death: 2.11 ‘Raisinette in the Sun’ Recap

by Chandra on April 17th, 2008

Joely Fisher and Brad Garrett/Til Death
Original Air Date: April 16, 2008

EDDIE and KENNY check out the new movie theater in town, and while Eddie is in the bathroom, Kenny goes to the concession stand to buy some snacks. As soon as Eddie comes back out, Kenny tells him the cashier ignored him completely and skipped over him to take the order of the white guy behind him on line.

What really happened becomes clearer when Eddie approaches a manager, angry and demanding an explanation. Now, Kenny adds in the finer details of the incident, such as he took a minute to look over the menu because he wasn’t sure what he wanted. He also points out the white guy in question, an elderly man using a walker.

Obviously, Kenny is seeing something that’s not there, and Eddie knows it. But, out of guilt, Eddie decides to back up Kenny’s claims, and the two leave the theater in a fit of righteous indignation, vowing never to return.

When Eddie arrives home afterwards, he finds JOY in a state of bliss over the new theater because it has a wine bar, which means no more sneaking in hers in a sippie bottle. She’s not thrilled when Eddie tells her they can’t go to the theater, especially when he reveals why, because it’s clear to her and any other rational person that what Kenny experienced was anything but racism.

His wife’s straightforwardness about the issue causes Eddie to agree that’s what he thinks, too, and Joy suggests he tell Kenny. So, Eddie goes over to Kenny’s apartment, where he and three of his black friends are hanging out and watching TV.

The minute Kenny identifies Eddie to his friends, they get excited to meet him since they already know how he had Kenny’s back at the theater during the incident. Of course, this prevents Eddie from speaking up, and later he and Joy go to the old, dilapidated movie theater instead of the new one. The police actually raid it while they’re there because someone was turning tricks in the men’s room.

The next day, Joy casually suggests that Eddie take his time ordering when he goes to meet Kenny and the guys at a chicken and waffle restaurant so he’ll get skipped over like Kenny was. She’s only joking, but Eddie sees genius in that tactic, and he decides to do it in order to show Kenny through example how what happened to him at the theater happens to all kinds of people all of the time.

Eddie, Kenny, and his friends get to the restaurant, which has a predominantly black clientele, and although Eddie does everything possible to take too long when ordering, everybody refuses to get impatient. The cashier tells him to take his time, and the guys on line behind him agree. Kenny, who’s directly behind Eddie, finally picks up on Eddie’s intentional slowness, forcing Eddie to blurt out why he’s deliberately holding up the line.

Kenny immediately reacts by getting defensive and saying that Eddie has no idea what black people go through … until even his friends chime in and agree that he does take forever to order. With no excuse to fall back on, Kenny tries to tell the cashier what he wants faster.

All seems good now, and Eddie and Kenny return to the movie theater. Eddie’s first stop is at the concession stand to apologize to the cashier for the previous confrontation. He gets a huge shock when she accepts, explaining she doesn’t have a problem with him, just “the coloreds.” Now it’s Eddie’s turn to get angry, and he calls Kenny over to leave in a huff.
