Back to You: 1.10 ‘The Wall of Fame’ Recap

Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton/Back to You
Original Air Date: April 16, 2008

There are lots of changes on Back to You post-hiatus. The first thing we notice during this episode is that the actress who plays Chuck and Kelly’s daughter Gracie has changed. She’s no longer Laura Marano, formerly of Without a Trace, but a newcomer named Lily Jackson. The network still lists Marano as the actress for Gracie in print material, yet Jackson’s name appears in the opening credits now, making it unclear if this is a permanent or temporary situation.

Another change introduced with this episode is that Ayda Field, who played weatherwoman Montana Diaz Herrera, has disappeared from the opening credits, the scenes, and the network’s press releases describing plots. Since there’s been no announcement that I know of regarding her sudden absence, I and lots of other people are wondering what’s going on.

Now to the recap…

GRACIE calls the news station office to tell her mom she made the honor roll. CHUCK takes the call because KELLY’s at a meeting to accept the Most Trusted Woman honor. Unfortunately, she couldn’t read Chuck’s handwriting from the message he took. As a result, she misinterprets his “9” as a “4” and ends up at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting instead.

Another unfortunate turn of events happens then because a WURG employee named MARGARET (Guest Star Amy Farrington) is also there, attending her regular AA meeting. Margaret is one of those needy people in search of a friend, and she latches onto Kelly and refuses to let go, although Kelly repeatedly tells her she’s not an alcoholic.

Meanwhile, one of Chuck’s current lady friends named DONNA (Guest Star Jennifer Lothrop) stops by to invite him over that night. She and a few others are celebrating a girlfriend’s recent boob job with a hot tub party. Of course, Chuck is more than eager to go. The only problem is he’s already promised to go to Marsh’s house for a dinner cooked by Marsh’s wife Peg (Guest Star Stephanie Faracy).

When Chuck arrives, he learns the dinner’s a ruse and that Marsh is actually throwing him a surprise birthday party. The sports anchor doesn’t realize Chuck’s birthday is actually five months away; Chuck lied to leave one of Marsh’s previous notoriously boring parties by saying he had to go celebrate his birthday, and Marsh believed him.

While Chuck is standing around with Kelly contemplating leaving, Kelly notices one particular photograph on a wall of pictures nearby. It shows her and Chuck kissing in the background during the farewell party for Chuck that led to the one time they slept together and, eventually, Gracie. Kelly wants to take the photo so the room full of reporters will have no chance to notice it, but Chuck insists she leave it alone and stop worrying about nothing.

We all know that’s impossible when it comes to priggish Kelly, though, and she spends the rest of the night first sitting in front of the picture and then taking it off the wall all together to hide it. When an upset Marsh tells Chuck later that he hid $6,000 behind the photo during the Y2K scare, the problem becomes returning it without him noticing.

While all of this is going on, the most hilarious scene in the episode by far takes place. RYAN goes in search of another bathroom because the Schwatz beer Marsh is serving makes the guys pee constantly, creating a long line in front of the bathroom near the party. To his horror, Ryan learns why Marsh didn’t want anyone on the second floor. In his bedroom, there’s a large mural on the wall of him and his wife naked in various compromising positions.

As Ryan learns when Peg catches him showing the room to GARY, Peg isn’t shy about sex at all. The men get really uncomfortable during her longwinded and steamy narrative about her and Marsh’s sex life, and they can’t escape fast enough. Yet, they’re still curious enough to fly down to the basement when Marsh tells them later that’s the one place in the house he really doesn’t want anyone to go.

The episode closes with Kelly and Chuck inside a dumpster in a dark alley, searching for the picture Kelly trashed. During the hunt, Chuck convinces Kelly that concealing the truth from Gracie any longer is silly. She finally agrees that Gracie should learn Chuck is her father, right before they find the picture. But, Kelly warns Chuck that if he leaves, she’ll hunt him down and kill him. Chuck really seems earnest when he responds that he’s not going anywhere.
