Welcome to the Captain: 1.5 ‘Mr. Big Meeting’ Recap

Original Air Date: March 3, 2008
If you’re a Captain fan, this episode is likely the last new one you’ll ever see. Although it’s only the fifth and six were originally ordered, once again the writers strike has prevented the completion of production on a series. Lackluster ratings and poor audience and critical reception mean it’s highly unlikely the show will get a reprieve in the form of a second-season pickup. Then again, much, much weirder things have happened on TV, so…
…on to the recap.
MARTY interrupts JOSH while he’s slaving over his screenplay. The accountant has big news — he showed Josh’s short film to a new girl he’s dating, and she loved it so much, she showed it to her friend who happens to work as the assistant to VIN KELSO (Guest Star Carlos Jacott), president of production at Paramount Pictures. Kelso loved the film, too, which is why Josh now has a meeting with him to discuss the screenplay he’s currently writing.
Josh grows nervous quickly because (1) he’s still in the process of writing the screenplay and (2) he’s never met with anyone that high up in the entertainment industry. Thankfully (or not), UNCLE SAUL offers his services pro bono to help Josh with the preliminaries. Meanwhile, JESUS is psyched because it’s time for the annual smoke detector checks, which means he gets to enter everybody’s apartment … legally.
During Josh’s prep meeting with Uncle Saul, the older writer throws a pillow at him and tells him about the pet monkey that put its diaper on its head like a hat while French kissing his ear. This happened during an important meeting Saul once had with an entertainment executive, and the moral of the story is that Josh must control the room during his sit-down with Kelso. He cannot let anything distract him while pitching his screenplay.
Downstairs, Jesus asks ASTRID to fill in at the front desk while he checks the smoke detectors the next day. His cousin Moses usually comes over when needed, but he’s not available. Flattered, Astrid enthusiastically agrees. The deliverymen are equally enthusiastic during her temporary service as they ogle her in the ultra short skirt she wears.
The next day, both Marty and Uncle Saul accompany Josh to Paramount for the big event. After they part ways with him on the studio lot, Uncle Saul winds up at the set where a popular show called Housemates is celebrating filming its 300th episode. Uncle Saul told Marty earlier that he helped the show’s creator, an old writing partner named MICKEY TITTLE (Guest star Bob Einstein), come up with the concept for the show. Although he didn’t get any credit for it, he claims that’s just water under the bridge.
During the visit, Mickey seems stunned that Uncle Saul thinks Housemates is based on Uncle Saul’s earlier idea for a show called Numb Nuts. At the time, Josh is pitching his script to Kelso, who throws a pillow at Josh near the beginning of the meeting to kill a spider, he claims. Since he was trained well by Saul, that doesn’t faze Josh at all. But, Kelso’s meeting room has a huge window and Josh does lose his concentration when Uncle Saul and Mickey come to blows outside it. After the meeting is over, Josh blames Saul for him blowing his big opportunity.
Back at The Captain, Josh returns to his apartment to find HOPE and Jesus inside, reading his screenplay. Nosy Jesus stumbled upon it while checking the smoke detector, and Hope eventually began reading it, despite initial reluctance to invade Josh’s privacy. Apparently, the plot, which revolves around a guy and girl who meet and fall for each other, is a page-turner. Josh’s spirits are lifted when Hope and Jesus tell him how much they like what they’ve read.
CHARLENE shows up then to ask if anything happened between Josh and Uncle Saul, who walked right by her in the exercise room and didn’t even offer to spot her while she performed her hip flexors like he normally does. Josh realizes at that point that he was wrong to blame Uncle Saul for his failure during the meeting with Kelso. So, he goes down to Uncle Saul’s apartment to thank him for his guidance and to ask for more help finishing his screenplay. Uncle Saul is ready and willing, of course.
