According to Jim: 7.7 ‘Period Peace’ Recap

by Chandra on February 13th, 2008

Recap
Original Air Date: February 12, 2008

While CHERYL is in Florida visiting her mother, RUBY and GRACIE argue incessantly. JIM wants to know what’s going on with the two, but he can’t ask them directly because (1) they’re not speaking to him and (2) even if they were, Ruby talks too much.

So, Jim and ANDY decide after the girls leave for school one day to search their room for clues in their diaries. They don’t have to actually go that far, however, because there’s evidence in the garbage can that Jim finds quickly: a wrapper for a sanitary napkin.

Jim panics and calls Cheryl for a little guidance. But, his wife hangs up on him after reminding him he told her he could handle household matters while she takes care of her mother. Andy is no help either, especially when the two head to the grocery store and end up buying half of the sanitary napkins and tampons because they have no idea what a woman’s monthly cycle requires.

When Jim and Andy return home, they conduct a little Internet research, some of which discusses rites of passages in various cultures for girls who are becoming women. The men decide they should throw a party for Ruby to acknowledge the transition.

When the girls come home from school, Jim pulls Gracie aside to explain to her why her sister has been so impossible to deal with lately. When he brings up the subject of her period and throwing a party, however, Gracie reveals to her mortified dad — he literally flinches whenever she says the benign word “period” — that she’s the one who has started menstruating.

Jim then goes upstairs to have the same talk with Ruby to explain why Gracie has been such a pain, and he finds that Ruby is angry because she hasn’t gotten her period yet, which means her younger sister has beaten her to that stage.

Downstairs, Andy helplessly tries to explain sanitary products to Gracie, who already learned all about them in school. Gracie informs her dad and uncle that she wants a party since they were going to throw one for Ruby. The kind of party that she has in mind, with cake and presents and whatnot, isn’t the kind they arrange, however.

Instead, they invite her gym teacher, a man, and the only other girl they know whose period has started already, and they talk about celebrating this new stage of Gracie’s life. When Andy throws a boxful of dead butterflies in the air (they were alive before he left them in the car), Gracie retreats to her room and promptly starts fighting with her sister again.

Jim, exasperated, threatens first to send the girls to Florida, and when they still continue arguing, he decides to go himself. Somewhere during the discussion, the girls realize that Gracie is acting up because she’s glad to not be second for once, and the sisters make up.

When Jim calls Cheryl later and tells her what she missed, Cheryl starts to throw a temper tantrum identical to the one Gracie had earlier. Jim hurries up and gives the phone to his daughters after he looks at his watch and confirms that it’s his wife’s time of the month, too.
