Another Mediocre ‘Cashmere Mafia’ Review

The Hollywood Reporter has thrown in its two cents about ABC’s new Darren Star dramedy Cashmere Mafia, and just as with Variety, the picture is not flattering in the least. The first clue? The review’s far less than enthusiastic title “‘Cashmere Mafia’ a show about not much.”
According to the writer, “there’s no confusing [‘Cashmere Mafia’], with its four beautiful women friends, with Star’s ‘Sex and the City’ or even a tamer, network version of that show.” And, after a plot description and additional criticism, the piece closes with the assessment that “[f]or a series like ‘Cashmere Mafia’ to survive, there would have to be practically no other dramas to watch and, whaddya know, that just might be the case, as more scripted shows fall victim to the writers strike.”
That’s not exactly the vote of confidence a fan would hope for, but still a borderline benign dose of reality given the current circumstances in the television industry. While I’ll refrain from forming an opinion of my own until I see the first few episodes, the Hollywood Reporter and Variety reviews definitely provide food for thought beforehand.
Cashmere Mafia debuts Sunday night at 10:01pm EST on ABC.

Well, I just watched the first two episodes of Cashmere Mafia and I kinda like it. It reminds me more of a cified version of Desperate Housewives. It referred to the Montecito (Las Vegas) in one scene and has a few moments that I would consider funny. Yes, catty, but funny too. I like the storylines. They are real. Maybe not every woman who watches the show is a powerhouse executive, but for those of us that aren’t it makes it more interesting to see how they live. I will definitely tune in again!

It’s good to see that Mafia has fans, Jess, because the cast certainly is of a good caliber. If I weren’t blogging about comedy television, though, I wouldn’t watch it. It’s not like doing so makes me physically ill or anything. I just think the show is very mediocre.
Still, I wouldn’t be too surprised if it eventually improved if only because, as I said before, the main cast is so talented. Better writing would be a *huge* help.

I liked the first 2 episodes. I thought that the writing was tight and concise. I started to lose interest when Darren Star cut the Alicia/Caitlin storyline. See as a lesbian of mixed ethnicity it is rare to see one on TV and an executive to boot. But Star chickened out and trashed that storyline only to pick it up again once Alicia tells Caitlin she’s returning to her ex lover Olivia. That totally sux. Still is was better than Lipstick Jungle.
