Movie Moment: Steve Carell Is ‘Dan in Real Life’

If you just can’t get enough of former Daily Show correspondent and current Office bossman Steve Carell, then do I have great news for you (as if you haven’t heard it already). Today, the actor’s latest screen venture, a romantic comedy called Dan in Real Life, opened in U.S. theaters.

The film is about newspaper advice columnist Dan Burns, a middle-aged widower and dedicated single father of three girls, who unexpectedly meets a beautiful woman named Marie (Juliette Binoche) one day in a bookstore. Soon after they start spending time together, however, Dan discovers that Marie is also romantically involved with his brother Mitch (Dane Cook). Talk about a bummer.

So far, reviews of Dan in Real Life have been all over the place, with most at least agreeing that star Carell and his French leading lady Binoche anchor the film effectively. Metacritic indicates an overall average score of 65, with the highest a perfect 100 from San Francisco Chronicle movie critic Mick LaSalle. LaSalle states in his review that “Dan in Real Life fires on so many circuits that at times it’s actually shocking how good it is.”

With a score of 50, the Boston Globe’s Ty Burr is on the opposite, middling end of the spectrum. His review notes that “[t]here’s a great movie to be had in the notion of a busybody whose advice keeps blowing up in his face, but Dan in Real Life merely sets it up and walks away.”

Fans of Carell and other cast members probably won’t care what professional critics think either way, though, and I totally support that attitude. If you’re in the mood for a little comedy and romance mixed together, Dan in Real Life is where it’s at this weekend.
