‘Pushing Daisies’ Earns the Back Nine for a Full-Season Ride

ABC is picking up its pickups these days. Just last week, the Alphabet Network awarded the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff Private Practice with a full season. Now, executives’ good graces are raining down on the romantic crime dramedy fantasy (Whew!) that precedes the medical series on Wednesday nights in the United States, the one and only Pushing Daisies.
It’s no secret that the whimsical and colorful series brought to us by the creative mind of Bryan Fuller (who’s also responsible for the gems Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me) has been an instant and continual ratings hit. Each week since its U.S. premiere on October 3, the series has effortlessly topped the Nielsens in its time slot for the 18–49 demographic. That’s quite a feat for a rookie.
The payoff for those excellent numbers arrived on October 23 with ABC’s announcement that the network has ordered nine more episodes of Pushing Daisies to add to the thirteen already in place, yielding a total of a full season. And, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer or more original show.
Another ABC newcomer is no slouch when it comes to ratings either. The highly anticipated—and I might add well worth the wait—Christina Applegate sitcom Samantha Who? has lead the Nielsens in its Monday-night time slot on its first two outings. Given the great ratings the comedy’s been posting, I fully expect for Samantha Who? to be among the next round of freshmen greenlighted for additional installments, if not a much-deserved full season.
