‘Everybody Hates Chris’ Third-Season Premiere: Everybody Hates the Guidance Counselor

by Chandra on October 1st, 2007

Everybody Hates Chris
The third season of The CW’s underappreciated and underpromoted gem Everybody Hates Chris begins tonight at 8pm EST with the noteworthy episode “Everybody Hates the Guidance Counselor.” Why is this installment such a big deal? Well, it marks the first time that the inspiration for the series, comedian extraordinaire Chris Rock, will put in a guest appearance playing—you guessed it—a guidance counselor, and a lousy one at that.

According to a piece in the current print edition of TV Guide, Rock’s character at one point tells eighth-grader Chris (Tyler James Williams), “You know you’ve got about as much direction as a broken compass. I’m surprised you were even able to find your way to this office. According to this test, you put the upid in ‘stupid.’” Goodness gracious.

Rock claims that his Mr. Abbott is based on actual school advisers he’s had in the past (Rock only made it to the tenth grade). See where the series’ title comes from now?

The official network description details:

EXECUTIVE PRODUCER CHRIS ROCK GUEST STARS IN THE SEASON THREE PREMIERE
After Chris (Tyler James Williams) tests poorly on a standard exam, his teacher, Ms. Morello (Jacqueline Mazarella), refers him to the school’s guidance counselor, Mr. Abbott (Rock). Although Chris tries to explain that the whole situation is a big mistake and he didn’t understand the importance of the test, Mr. Abbott puts him through a series of mental evaluations and eventually determines that Chris must attend a remedial class.
