Fall 2007 Newbie: The Big Bang Theory

The Eye Network CBS, already home to a hot, hot, hot Monday-night comedy lineup (Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, The New Adventures of Old Christine, Rules of Engagement), is introducing just one new sitcom this fall, what it calls the “genius comedy” The Big Bang Theory.
Co-created and executive produced by Chuck Lorre, the same man who brought the world television’s current top-rated sitcom Two and a Half Men, the young-skewing series stars Johnny Galecki of Roseanne and Jim Parsons of Judging Amy as Leonard and Sheldon, best-friend geeks who know a lot about academic stuff but not so much about life—especially women—until sexy babe Penny (Kaley Cuoco of Charmed and 8 Simple Rules… for Dating My Teenage Daughter) moves across the hall, opening the door for them to mingle a bit more with average people.
The CBS press release describes the rest of the premise.
[Penny] quickly makes an impression on the other members of Leonard and Sheldon’s geek squad - Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg, “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”), who portrays himself as the Casanova of Cal Tech, and fellow whiz kid Rajesh Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar, “NCIS”), who is rendered speechless around anyone unprepared to converse about the Theory of Relativity or other scientific jargon. The chemistry between this gaggle of geniuses and a delightful damsel is about to undergo a stimulating series of inter-personal experiments.
All of the clips that I’ve seen thus far of this newcomer are mediocre at best, and I’m sensing a repeat of the failure that was The Class last fall rather than another Rules of Engagement. However, the show’s lucky enough to be paired in the 8–9pm EST hour with the very funny lead-in How I Met Your Mother, a show that targets an identical age demographic and has a very loyal following.
Will that be enough to help The Big Bang Theory pan out? Well, geeks are all the rage this season, coming second only to sci-fi series. And there’s also the fact that Galecki’s fellow Roseanne alum Sara Gilbert, who played his wife back then, is slated for a multi-episode guest-star arc later in the season as a romantic interest for Leonard. So, anything looks possible at this early point.
The Big Bang Theory premieres Monday, September 24, at 8:30pm EST.
