Fall 2007 Newbie: Back to You
Many people are eagerly anticipating the new Fox sitcom Back to You because it’s not only bringing back to the small screen a pair of well-liked personalities from two of the most successful comedy shows in television history, but wrapping them up in one tidy package for maximum entertainment value.
Six-time Emmy winner Kelsey Grammer has the singular distinction of playing psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane for a whopping twenty years on NBC, eleven on Frasier preceded by nine on Cheers, in addition to an Emmy-nominated 1992 guest appearance as the good doctor on NBC’s Wings. Two-time Emmy winner (and seven-time nominee) Patricia Heaton is no lightweight either after playing Debra Barone, wife of Ray Romano’s character Ray Barone, on CBS’ Everybody Loves Raymond for nine years.
Together, Grammer and Heaton share top billing on Fox’s Back to You as skirt-chasing Chuck Darling and priggish Kelly Carr, formerly partnered Pittsburgh newscasters whose previous on-air rapport might not survive Chuck’s return after a ten-year departure to seek fame in a larger news market. The reunification comes courtesy of a very public scandal that begins with Chuck losing control on television for anyone who’s watching to see.
Yet, when Chuck arrives back at his old WURG-9 job following that embarrassment, things are a bit different. Among the most notable changes are his new colleagues, overextended news director Ryan Church (ER guest star Josh Gad) and sexy weather anchor Montana Diaz Herrera (Ayda Field of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip), whom he must work with alongside previous fellow employees Marsh McGinley (Fred Willard, Heaton’s occasional colleague on Everybody Loves Raymond), a crude but lovable sportscaster, and hapless reporter Gary Crezyzewski (Out of Practice’s Ty Burrell). Child actress Laura Marano (Dexter, Without a Trace) rounds out the cast as Gracie Carr, the ten-year-old offspring of single mom Kelly.
Back to You—which is created, executive-produced, and written by Steven Levitan (Frasier, Just Shoot Me!, Wings) and Christopher Lloyd (Frasier, The Golden Girls)—premieres on Fox Wednesday, September 19, at 8pm EST.
