Exclusive Interview: Being Bill Engvall Is Pretty Good Right Now

Bill Engvall
After the family sitcom The Bill Engvall Show premiered on cable’s TBS in July 2007, the network and the comedy’s cast and crew were no doubt thrilled about the popularity it quickly gained. The series is heading our way again this summer for a highly anticipated second season that starts on June 12, just a few weeks after the DVD set for the first season is released on May 20.

Comedy Centric recently received the opportunity to interview series star Bill Engvall, whom most fans probably know best through his standup comedy work and membership in the famed Blue Collar Comedy group. As the following Q&A reveals, the comedian-actor is understandably proud of his current TV show, especially its appeal to different age groups.

Read on to learn what’s happening with Engvall and his self-titled series, which also stars Nancy Travis (Becker, Almost Perfect), Jennifer Lawrence, Graham Patrick Martin, and Skyler Gisondo as his TV family, in addition to Steve Hytner (Roswell, Seinfeld) and Tim Meadows (Saturday Night Live) as his friends. There’s also an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip for the sitcom at the end.

You’re coming up now to Season Two of The Bill Engvall Show, which you co-created. How has the show evolved since it started?

Bill Engvall: Well, I think it’s longer and more refined. I think if you have a show for a while, it grows to be more in tune with what you want to do. We’ve taped three episodes so far, and they’ve been great.

How I Met Your Mother: 3.19 ‘Everything Must Go’ Recap

How I Met Your Mother
Original Air Date: May 12, 2008

This episode is all about Lily and Marshall selling some of their stuff to raise the funds they need to get the slanted floor in their new apartment fixed, as well as Barney and Abby (Guest Star Britney Spears) getting revenge on Ted for dumping them both.

When still-jobless Marshall learns it’s going to cost $1500, much more than the estimate, to repair the floor in his and Lily’s new apartment, he decides she needs to sell some of her expensive clothes online since his dowdy clothes aren’t the kind of things people would actually pay money for.

After setting up lilyandmarshallselltheirstuff.com (a real website that I’ve been unable to access — must be a lot of server traffic), Lily — reluctant to get rid of her nice clothes, no matter how eager Robin is to buy them — comes up with the alternative plan of selling three of her colorful, abstract paintings for $500 each within a week.

She has no success at first because, as Marshall is scared to admit to her, they’re not like “real” paintings by “real” artists. Thus, Lily is almost ready to give up when a G-CWOK (gay couple without kids) saves the day. They happen by and buy one of her paintings for the entire asking price.

The Big Bang Theory: 1.16 ‘The Peanut Reaction’ Recap

The Big Bang Theory
Original Air Date: May 12, 2008

This episode is all about Leonard’s birthday. When Penny learns his parents raised him without ever giving him a birthday party — they believed in celebrating achievements, not his passage through the birth canal — she becomes determined to throw him one.

Penny’s plans for a surprise party require Sheldon to buy a gift, an act the genius is initially opposed to since he approves of Leonard’s parents’ no-party mindset and respects Leonard’s claims that he doesn’t want a party; Howard to get Leonard out of the apartment long enough for the others to set up; and Rajesh to stay behind in the apartment decorating and greeting guests until the rest of the gang returns.

When Howard stops by, Leonard is determined to stay at home and finish his game of Halo. The only way to lure him out is for Howard, who’s allergic to nuts, to pretend he accidentally ate a peanut. This trick gets Leonard to the hospital, where a nurse refuses to play along with Howard’s game.

Meanwhile, Penny is at the electronics store helping a reluctant Sheldon — who doesn’t understand the concept of picking out and purchasing presents — buy his roommate a gift. He ends up assisting customer after customer after customer when one asks a question, and to encourage him to leave, Penny has to find a real employee to threaten Sheldon with calling security.

Series Star Confirms ‘Scrubs’ Reprieve on ABC

Scrubs
Surprise! Not!

Most of us already knew this, but just in case there are any doubters left out there who still think it’s all a cruel, unfunny hoax, Zach Braff has publicly confirmed that Scrubs is definitely taking a hike to ABC for its forthcoming eighth and final season.

Why can the show do that? Because ABC owns it, although the series aired on NBC. If that sounds weird, take the Fox hit House as an example. Despite the series’ identification with Fox, NBC Universal actually owns it. That’s why you can watch all the House repeats you want several times a week on NBC’s sister cable network USA.

Braff sent the following message (located conveniently after the jump) to his MySpace buddies earlier today. You should proceed with caution if you haven’t yet had the chance to catch last Thursday’s NBC finale “My Princess” since the final paragraph contains several spoilers (that most fans figured out on their own, I might add, though clarification doesn’t hurt).

More Prophecies in Store for ‘Eli Stone’

Jonny Lee Miller
This is the best development I’ve heard in the last couple of days: ABC has made a wise decision and renewed one of my favorite new shows, the Jonny Lee Miller dramedy Eli Stone, for a second season.

However, just like The CW’s renewal of Reaper, the news comes with a downside because the pickup is for a midseason-sized run of only 13 episodes, which matches the number of installments in the freshman season.

Oh, well. Fans will have to learn to appreciate the fact that we’ll at least get to see Eli and company again in the near future, rumored to be as soon as the fall. I, for one, can’t wait to learn what happens with the whole aneurysm situation post-surgery.

Cheers to the Eli Stone team!

‘Reaper’ Second-Season Renewal Means More Devil Time

Reaper
There’s excellent news breaking today, Reaper fans! The CW has renewed the series for a second season, albeit as a midseason replacement with just 13 episodes.

A 22-episode full season would have been much more to my preference, of course. But the way things have been going following the writers’ strike, I’m definitely not complaining, especially since the word is that The CW will probably pair the show with Supernatural after Smallville completes its run. That’s a commendable programming move that could help both shows, each underappreciated by mainstream viewers, acquire/retain fans.

Congratulations to the fabulous cast and crew of Reaper!

How I Met Your Mother: Britney Spears Is Doing It Again

Britney Spears
Tonight, in fact.

So, check out a sneak peek (and some hideous matching sweaters) from the May 12th episode “Everything Must Go” after the jump. Then cross your fingers, along with me, that this doesn’t become a regular thing.

I know BS helped the ratings when she appeared the first time, but there really is such a thing as too much. One more episode with her on and I’ll have my fill.
